Wood expands when it is wet; therefore, never use excessive water to clean your floors. If water is dropped on the floor, it should be cleaned up immediately. Large amounts of water can cause the wood to swell, crack or splinter. Also hardwood expands and contracts due to moisture level changes. You may need a dehumidifier to keep your house’s moisture level consistent.
All hardwood floors which are refinished with polyurethane, should never be waxed, cleaned with glass cleaner, or cleaned with any type of cleaner that could leave a firm or residue.
You should use a good quality broom or vacuum to remove debris from hardwood floors regularly. If you are using hardwood floor cleaning products, ensure that it is safe to remove stains and spots, without dulling the floor’s coating.
For everyday cleaning of your hardwood floors, clean up spills immediately with paper towels and a small amount of water that is promptly dried.
